The importance of preserving the remains of the Moors Gate Cal
Mario Lozano Alonso. Degree in History.
The recent discovery of the remains of the Moors Gate Cal in a lot of popular Wet District (Note 1), represents a good opportunity to preserve one of the few leftovers from the late medieval Jewry Leon.
During the fourteenth century the city of León had outgrown the old Roman walls, with the need to build a new wall that shields the Burgo Nuevo, which, thanks to the expansion of the city, south of the rectangle appears Roman and was the main shopping district and craftsmanship.
Moors, one of the eight entries in this new fence, allowing access to the city from the suburb of Santa Ana now within the walled enclosure, the street leading to it was to Cal Moors
However, the door had other functions than the defensive, as he served the Jewish community. We are aware that the doorway was a hall where the Jewish court met Leon to settle their cases. The existence of a room on a city gate was not unusual in the city, because we know that Poridad , the council
As described by Juan Carlos Place, the door consisted of a round arch framed by two towers (Note 3), not being too unreasonable to assume that on the arch, and between the towers , could have placed the Hebrew courtroom.
The gate, with the passage of time, change name to Puerta de Santa Ana being output to the suburbs. Will be demolished in 1866 by order of Mayor Paul Leon and Brizuela. Unfortunately, not preserved illustrations of the time to show their respect.
The remains found in the year 2010 are of great importance, I repeat, by the virtual absence of visible remains of the late medieval Jewry Leon. Even the current street plan is fully in line with the medieval, as they have been extensions or other restructuring. Preserving this door has to be a priority for the council and the public.
it would be advisable preserve the remains integrated in the new building, enabling a small room that can be visited in a similar way as was done with the remains of the amphitheater Cascalerías street. This room could be integrated into a well-organized thematic route Leon Jewry that, in our opinion, never be complete until you make a final excavation Castrum Iudeorum Bridge
Castro and the establishment of a Jewish museum which shows the wealth of which was the main north Sephardic Jewry. Only in this way can there be to do justice to the rich Jewish heritage of León, which still remains unjustly forgotten.
