A PIECE OF HISTORY OF BLUE

Supplement Extraordinary. BLUE DAY TIME, THURSDAY, JULY 9, 1964.

A blue piece of history: Captain Expeditionary
in Solano Rufino Desert War, the national army linguist

This is the brief history of the brave was relegated into oblivion because the men and wanted: his own countrymen, those who benefited from his exploits, with their sacrifices to serve and protect the growing population was spread by these payments in the middle of last century. The story of a hero would need to develop an entire book in a thousand and one episodes in which the man was involved, the treacherous crossroads was forced to overcome the risk of his life, the death traps that lurk in the performance of their hard mission that was being committed by the army command had taken a hundred and forty years, the Desert War and the principal enemy of the Indian savage, ruthless and cruel, whose head was later founded by the redoubtable Chief of Dynasty of Callfucurá Piedras.

Cavalry and caravans put a marker on the pampa indomitable

año1832 and ending at the hot month of December were advancing from the north towards the center of the province of Buenos Aires, Pampa immense sea of grass, uproar from the bustle of day for thousands and thousands of cattle and horses on the gallop of the Indians and the songs of birds and silent night sky studded with stars that seemed to hang like bright lamps, advanced, he said, squad 5 th Cavalry Regiment (the famous Mount Colorados) under the command of Don Pedro Burgos, who had part of his course "The Miracles Stack in the game for people that would be found after our city of San Serapio Blue and Martyr. Almost on a par with the troops also came from Salt caravan convoy consisting of two galleys, carts and chariots, and those who traveled many families building materials under the command of Solano (Solano * Rufino's father) to who was accompanied by a doctor and a priest - Army chaplain and civil-military found in mid-December on the shores of Callvú Leovú immediately initiating the construction of a fort and the shantytown to house the families and troops, and consequently classified Strong Federation Blue later Fort San Serapio Martyr. Those early years were dramatic for the inhabitants of this vast area populated by Indian tribes chiefs Venancio, Laudan, and Cachul Catriel, whose depredations caused dramatic episodes bringing terror to the Christians. Catriel and Cachul happily through two agreements with the government began friendly relations with Juan Manuel de Rosas, the commander compadre Pedro Burgos and by donating vast prairies by the Chief of General Manuel Escalante border, were staying with their tribes to the left bank of Blue Creek northward to some Tapalqué leagues. Sad days and long nights of expectations and of terror were born to live in that blue comes alarms and anxieties. Men and women slept with one eye open for fear of a surprise attack by the Indians, who year after year were going to culminate in 1835 when the terrible Callfucurá with 3,000 bloody raid launched assaults on the people leaving the streets bodies of more than three hundred residents, taking dozens of women and children captives to Salinas Grandes, the capital of the sovereign Indian rule, leaving behind fire, tears and grief. In this atmosphere was born and grew wild later Captain Rufino Solano, who was born in Blue back in 1837, son of Commander Solano founder of the town with the commander Don Pedro Burgos united in their civil - military. Familiar with Captain Solano danger from small mixed with the local Indians and they learned to speak the language and Araucano Pampa as well as the Castilian as he came later to become famous linguist of the man who served as liaison among the powerful chiefs and delegates of the National Government since giving great service to the Fatherland. It was his diplomatic mission in the vast Pampa who crossed from East to West, from North to South, serene, undisturbed, native horse rider in the day taking the lengthy sea of grass: "Huge high sea green - where the eye can see - without having to spend "- and night sky roof of dark or bright stars that mark the route, sleeping in the open times between storms, drenched by the rain which waters prevented him up to overflowing streams and ravines. Was to suffer the rigors of the sun in the summer and intense cold in the winter with the stoicism of a Spartan, was to live for days, weeks and months slaughtered in their mission to be served because it was his duty, because it required orders, because could conquer more land and the wild for the nation. Never mind Captain gallop for days Solano under the relentless sun in January, crossing deserts or lost in the high grasslands of the plain that stretched lonely, treacherous to the south having such stones with some other very poor fort garrison of five or six men to the alarm caused by the hooves pingo some ragged and haggard peeked through the door of a ranch surrounded by the fence which were neglected by the government there, protected only in their faith in God and country and some old rifles from the war of Independence to defend the Indians. Well might say those who lived to die with great pain and little glory ...
Thirty or forty miles separated each such vanguards of civilization and those who took risks to fulfill their mission in such a precarious half death had accompanied him to his front, sides, behind his back. It led the skilled person, the linguist by instinct and put a shield of the danger their courage and confidence, as would later Hernandez in his immortal "Martin Fierro"

"To beat a danger
Save any abyss
For I say this experience,
More than the sword and the spear is often used confidence

That man has in himself. "

Thus Captain Solano, obstacle after obstacle, trusting the Indian friend and sleeping in their awnings when the raging and icy cold skin burned in the long winter nights. Wild landscapes, barren and ungrateful for the body and soul. So when you take a look back and you get to that past so rugged that the rough is the sublimity of heroism who lived for years this beautiful land that is blue and continues in its down to the edge of Callvú Leovú up reach the mountains which extend as a long string to the south, when a stroke is erased what civilization has brought us and we now enjoy and we are left alone Fortin Blue and San Serapio as the center point Province 132 years ago up to the side of the stream, surrounded by marshes and surrounded his days and nights with strange cries of the plain extending at times as the sounds of an orchestra nuanced report to the hurricane winds blow, you sudestada temporary or caused by the roar of the pampas, we are facing a pathetic and miserable box full of anxiety for people new to these lands, which only eased concern about the future with confidence in the redeeming Cross which opened its arms at the ranch over the humble church guarded by the priest and the brave men gaucho that weapon in arm watching the horizon to avoid being surprised by the barbarian raid. It was in this atmosphere of fear of becoming, of uncertainty and poverty Franciscan grew Rufino Solano, who later became Captain of the Army and its mission of linguist's trusted commanders of the expeditionary forces in the Desert War Whoever said that great patriot, Don Adolfo Alsina:

"You Rufino
Solano is in his office so useful to
country as the best warrior"

Solano Those early years were hectic. Her father thoroughly fulfilled its mission by providing that all the material that came on the truck was delivered on rising Blue Fortin its residents a tool in hand were the first craftsmen in this inhospitable plains, rising in and out of the fort the first homes in the center of the tower served as a watchtower for continuous monitoring.
arduous was the task he played from small to this brand azuleño developed between the neighing of the studs raised, the roar of the estates and the noise of swords in the cavalry squadrons that defended the fort. In this atmosphere of constant war and swings while grasses were cut and kneaded the mud to lift the ranches, Rufino Solano grew to serve the interests of the small community at the same time with the Indians who came to the fort to trade learned their language and customs. As if sensing its role play would play years later, Solano tried to get into the privacy of the family india, see its virtues and vices, their joys and sorrows. Have studied the ability of their chieftains and capitanejos and the value they had their words and promises. The fallacy of some, the sweet but treacherous language of others, the savagery of the most in his days and nights of drinking and well in this hard life full of privations of the camp, came to know through and through the Indian to become familiar with this at all aspects which allowed him to enter his tribes erected in the desert since I started in the military, still a child, turned heroic and protracted campaign more than half a century. Friend

Callfucurá

The year was 1855 when Rufino Solano turned 18 and was sent to the South to Fort Estomba to serve under the command of Lieutenant Manuel Perafán Cavalry, with a detachment guarding the region of Bahía Blanca enter the domain of Callfucurá, being about forty Salinas Grandes miles away. It was there on a mission that was entrusted with fellow met the mighty monarch of that vast empire. Could see then and on other visits he made to Calfucurá that this was a man who enjoyed great prestige among his followers and especially between the Chiefs of many tribes that lodged in his dominions stretching from the Black River south to the shores of the Rio Salado covering thousands of miles of Indian villages were the powerful army with which national troops war without asking Callfucurá headquarters coming down to the Araucanian was shrewd, diligent and highly parliament, allowing him to diplomatically get perks and subsidies from the authorities without committing a lot.

Solano was sentenced to death saved his life.

Having died at the hands Perafán Lieutenant India in tough combat, Rufino Solano subsequently acted Line Regiment 2 under the command of Lieutenant in the Fort Ivano Tapalqué and then served with the Commander Lora Olavarria, until in 1865 the famous Colonel Don Benito Machado Army commander in this region is incorporated as a linguist to the staff. When Solano Rufino took charge that mission was already an experienced and had been on previous occasions with patience and long hours of parliament asked its leaders entrusted. Usually by peace treaties, paying tribute to the rebel chiefs and delivery of snuff, alcohol, clothes, food and money could calm the most belligerent while fighting the Indians Ladino acting next to the chiefs. Was in 1860 when Solano on an official mission traveled with two colleagues who served as his bodyguard to Salinas Grandes to meet with Callfucurá sent to agree with that. On this trip as on previous Solano risked his life, because otherwise could not penetrate the desert completely dominated by the Indian and helpless by the lack of land and crossing places with good watering and shelter. But with courage Solano Rufino foolproof and entrusted their fate moved to Salinas Grandes where he Callvucurá interview. It was to reach agreement to avert a new war, but as the Cacique distrust asked to send a delegation of Indians to the fort would Estomba headed Solano. Refused Callfucurá
that proposal and instead agreed to send one of his children (he had a dozen of his tribe) the lead, but wanted the bad luck on the way there were a meeting with armed militia and locked in combat son being killed Callfucurá. Immediately and in Salinas Grandes aware of what happened was moved the Indians and Solano with his two companions were taken prisoner and jealously guarded as he joined the War Council without much parliament condemned to death three Christians charged with treason. The sentence was communicated to them in the higher canopy Callfucurá presence and that was when it seemed that nothing could be done to save the life Solano, contact the Chief began a long speech highlighting the sincere friendship that brought him to that place, the aid that the Indians had managed to at other times and wrong of the ruling. After a dramatic silence that his words were received from non-Indian judges revoked the sentence faced Rufino solano decided to Callfucurá saying
- The powerful head tell if it is true that I was not their son who was going to front of the Indian delegation and if it was he who decided to send it to parliament.
Callfucurá, taken by surprise by the words of the condemned what looked a long time, rose from the chair he occupied for several minutes he walked to the length and width of the awning downcast and pensive before the expectant eyes of judges and sentenced. Then he spoke and loud, distorted by emotion, addressing the court said:
- This man is right. I ordered my son was on that mission he met his death. So this man not guilty to go free with their peers. And passing
Callfucurá with Solano said in broken English: Go and run away quickly! As quickly as possible before they kill my Indians! I can not go outside
contain them ... And so at the drop of a rooster and his two companions Solano saddled their horses and left Salinas Grandes cross-country shooting, while going far beyond being the fierce Indian was set to chase. Solano had won the game in hand, the advantage was great and it was impossible to catch them, but the death had been close, because the Indians killed the Christian prisoners in the midst of dreadful scenes on the death of a woman or a child of Cacique! New raids

Solano's fame as a linguist Rufino brave and extends throughout our region and numerous missions entrusted to various chiefs and the same Callfucurá to forget the incident recounted above gives his friendship and protection, providing comfort in Salinas Grandes. Solano went there again in 1865 after winning their way through the Indians 'fire' rather than watch the Indian army advanced all the steps. Travel from Salinas Grandes Olavarría up for more than seventy miles alone and carrying a spare horse, bringing back many Christian women who were captives and were returned to their family once transposed borders. The following year Colonel Benito Machado removed and replaced in the control of the border forces of Colonel Don Álvaro Barrosa Solano whose orders continued to serve in 1868 and was promoted to Lieutenant 2, made several trips to Salinas Grandes where it remains for long periods. In these circumstances the brave azuleño Callfucurá discussed with his advisers and the best way to reach an agreement with the national government and avoid the bloody struggle and manages to rescue those swings about thirty prisoners returning to the Riviera. Thereafter there is little you can do to stop the Indians because Callfucurá has launched a relentless war and invade the area of Bahía Blanca. Tres Arroyos Quequén and thugs along that route to return with a huge Great Salt herding and hundreds of captives. The chief prepares new raids and the national army is prepared to contain and defeat.

empire collapsed

And as it was predicting in his long discussions in Salinas Grandes, Callfucurá the Invincible, the diplomat of the pampas, the seasoned politician of extraordinary ability for the world, one day saw his army defeated in San Carlos de Bolívar by the forces of civilization that resisted the alliance relied on its power. This West Indian come to our region that was under his command to the Confederation Indiana, which dominated from the south of Blue River to beyond the Black and buttresses of the Andes, retained Rufino Solano hard to erase a memory, as it not only saved his life on several occasions but the prodigal brother tried undeniable signs of sympathy. The year was 1873 when Callfucurá died at an advanced age saddened by the defeat inflicted by the Argentine arms and never managed to replace. For its part new career possibilities were for him and be our hero Captain Rufino Solano Generals acted alongside Arias, Rivas and Leyría to finish with honors desert warfare at the end of last century.
then asked his retirement he did fifty years of service and he settled in this city lived in the company of his family, until he died one day in July 1913. For fifty-one years. Someday when the history of Blue type will appear far anonymous heroes such as Captain Rufino Solano gave the best of their lives for the country contributing to its greatness without asking for anything more than the honor of serving with honor and sacrifice and dying for carrying forward the glorious blue and white flag.

A FRIEND SAVED MANY LIVES. THE STORY OF CAPTAIN RUFINO SOLANO, A 97 YEARS AFTER HIS DEATH.

The July 20 1913, died in his hometown on azuleño Rufino Solano. He was born in this town on 09 April 1838, as recorded in the minutes baptism based in Blue Cathedral, being baptized by Father Ramón de la Sota Clemente, "chaplain of Fort Blue", was the son of Dionysus Solano, a co-founder of Azul in 1832 and rural mayor of "the Blue Creek high "for nearly twenty years.

Solano's family lived in the same area where the tribe was based Catriel dynasty, living all in complete and total communion for decades (map DGYC, No. 1270-29-3, Cornell, John 1859). For this reason, the birth of Rufino Solano were in the same place and almost identical birth date on which the brave and legendary chief Cipriano Catriel, this close relationship is maintained until there was the tragic death of the chief, on 19 November 1874. A year before that tragic event, they were seen fighting side by side against a common enemy in the memorable Battle of San Carlos, in the present town of Bolivar. Rufino Solano When he turned 18 he became a "soldier" at Fort Estomba (near Tapalqué) and, in turn, Cipriano Catriel and was 30 years old when he finally took command of his people, we must also remember that this chief spoke Castilian and was well integrated into society azulene, which alternated his residence to the house in the Arroyo de Nieva.

In the same way, Rufino Solano learned the native language, to slide along the endless and random extensions and a host of skills deemed friends of his childhood and youth. Of them also knew the value of friendship and being true to his word, we can say more than "linguist", thanks to its deep understanding of the soul of the Indian, Rufino Solano was a "almaraz" I there a big difference .

These particular conditions and their considerable knowledge, enabled him to master Rufino later Solano approaching, stay and then withdraw from the awnings of the most lofty and well-known chiefs, agreeing with them treaties of peace and well being and bringing captives from both sides. Were countless number of people who regained their freedom and their lives saved thanks to this "brother captain" and a friend of all. All these people continued their lives and their descendants live today in our city and many others.

Therefore, the anniversary of his death and, paradoxically, in the Friendship Day is right to give this well-deserved recognition of this exemplary citizen of our BLUE .-
